Dilation & Curettage

Dilation & Curettage (D&C)

Dilation & Curettage (D&C) is a minor surgical procedure in which the cervix is gently widened (dilated) and a small instrument is used to remove tissue from the inner lining of the uterus. This procedure is performed to diagnose or treat various uterine conditions such as abnormal bleeding, miscarriage management, or removal of retained tissue. D&C is quick, safe, and often performed as an outpatient procedure, offering relief and clarity in many gynecological conditions.

Symptoms and Causes

Common Symptoms That May Require D&C

  • Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
  • Bleeding between periods
  • Postmenopausal bleeding
  • Severe cramping with abnormal bleeding
  • Retained products of conception after miscarriage or delivery
  • Suspicion of uterine abnormalities requiring diagnosis

Major Causes

  • Hormonal imbalances causing irregular or heavy bleeding
  • Uterine polyps or fibroids
  • Endometrial hyperplasia (thickened uterine lining)
  • Incomplete miscarriage or retained tissue
  • Postpartum complications such as retained placenta
  • Need for endometrial sampling to rule out cancer or precancerous changes

Treatments

Dilation & Curettage itself is a treatment as well as a diagnostic tool. It helps relieve symptoms and allows accurate tissue analysis when needed.

  • The cervix is gently dilated using medical instruments
  • Suction or curettage is used to remove tissue from the uterus
  • Procedure may be combined with hysteroscopy for better visualization
  • Used to stop heavy bleeding and remove retained products of conception
  • Provides samples for diagnosing cancer, hyperplasia, or infections
  • Pain management and quick recovery follow-up provided

Prevention

While D&C is a corrective procedure, some underlying conditions leading to it may be minimized with early care:

  • Regular gynecological check-ups for early detection of uterine issues
  • Managing hormonal imbalances through lifestyle and medical treatment
  • Timely treatment of abnormal bleeding or menstrual disorders
  • Maintaining a healthy weight and hormonal balance
  • Managing underlying conditions like PCOS, thyroid disorders, or diabetes
  • Seeking prompt care after miscarriage or childbirth complications
